The USS Miyazaki (NCC-316608) was a 31st century Federation Constitution-class starship operated by Starfleet under the command of Captain Chi from 3067 to 3069, when mechanical failures of the ship's prototype singularity drive killed the entire crew.
The crew's adventures during its brief service went on to inspire the Tales From the Frontier comic book series in the 32nd century, inspiring some, like B'Avi, "in darker days", while others, like Caleb Mir, considered them Starfleet propaganda. The ship itself was later used in test missions by the War College and Starfleet Academy in the 3190s.
Service history
The Miyazaki was commissioned in 3067, at a time when the Federation was desperately exploring warp drive alternatives. With a crew of 275, Captain Chi's missions included exploring Planet Ray.
In 3069, several mechanical failures caused the singularity drive to go offline and the entire crew perished. The ship's computer, as a means of self preservation, split its operations across a wide variety of systems. The ship was essentially abandoned in a starship graveyard in Sector 0041 of the Beta Quadrant.
Cadet training site
The Starfleet War College reclaimed the Miyazaki in 3190, and used it annually for cadet tactical training, the corridors still littered with debris, and various stations tarped off. In 3194, one cadet team came close to reactivating the singularity drive, but in the five years the College used the ship, no team scored above 65%.
In 3195, in the War College's first joint Miyazaki mission with the newly-reopened Starfleet Academy, students from various teams again coordinated to learn away mission protocols, even setting a new record for restoring power. But the students and the USS Athena unexpectedly came under attack by the Furies, ejecting Lieutenant Commander Tomov from an airlock. While Captain Nahla Ake negotiated strategy with Nus Braka to save the students, the students reengaged the ship's singularity drive. (SA: "Come, Let's Away")
In 3196, during the Omega-47 crisis, the location of the "Miyazaki Graveyard" was depicted on star charts and readouts used across several locations on the USS Athena to locate, monitor, and respond to the Omega-47 mines laid by the Venari Ral. (SA: "300th Night", "Rubincon")

Naming
The Miyazaki is likely named after animator Hayao Miyazaki (宮崎 駿), whose works have occasionally been referenced through in-jokes such as Totoro and Nausicaan.
The Miyazaki's registry number is the same as the USS Giacconi.
Class
On-screen graphics labelled the Miyazaki as "ship class Constitution". However, the accompanying diagram and the wreckage do not resemble any of the prior known classes by that name – see Constitution class (disambiguation).
