A particle of Omega-47
Omega-47 was a synthetic variant of the Omega molecule developed by the Federation as a potential new power source. Theoretically, a single molecule would be able to power an entire planet for a million years. Starfleet used rubin particles to make Omega-47 easier to stabilize, and gluons to increase the strength of its molecular bonds. Omega-47 had a comparable potential for destruction as the original Omega, capable of "shredding" space and subspace across an entire sector and rendering warp travel impossible for millions of years, if not indefinitely.
A quantity of Omega-47 was stored aboard Starbase J19-Alpha. In late 3195, Nus Braka of the Venari Ral orchestrated a scheme to ransack the station and seize the molecules. The marauders also stole classified weapons technology that enabled Braka to develop Omega-47 mines, which he deployed against the Federation the following year.
After The Doctor communicated that the molecules could be permanently stabilized by reducing the amount of rubin particles, the USS Athena crew devised a plan to disarm the minefield. Caleb Mir hacked into Braka's subspace control signal, allowing SAM to transmit an algorithm that adjusted the rubin particle concentration within the Omega-47 molecules and render them harmless. The mention of “gluons doing their jobs” hints that, at least in its synthetic form, the omega molecule is actually a hadron, i.e. a composite particle made of quarks and gluons, much like protons.
