Display of the singularity drive in operation

The singularity drive was an experimental alternative to warp drive, developed by the Federation in the 31st century to address their shortage of dilithium.

The USS Miyazaki tested the singularity drive for the first time in 3069. It caused a catastrophic series of mechanical failures that destroyed the ship's systems and killed the entire crew.

From 3190 onward, the War College used the derelict Miyazaki as a cadet training site; on two occasions, the cadets attempted to restore power by reactivating the singularity drive. In the spring semester of 3195, the cadets installed a computer program to safely restart the drive, but ran out of time to initiate it. The program was named "Tiny Fireflies", after the energy that gathered around the drive during operation.

Amid another training mission in fall 3195, a team of War College and Starfleet Academy cadets were trapped on the Miyazaki bridge by band of Furies. In order to disrupt the Furie jamming field preventing the USS Athena from beaming them out, Commander Zeeren Kelrec proposed to reactivate the drive, which would create a gravimetric displacement from the Miyazaki's deflector. Tarima Sadal telepathically relayed the instructions to the trapped cadets, who successfully used Tiny Fireflies to restart the drive. (SA: "Come, Let's Away")

This drive may utilize an artificial quantum singularity. The holographic depiction is similar to the artifical quantum singularity drive utilized by Romulans in Star Trek Online.
