Kaira was a Khionian who lived in the late 32nd century. She was the daughter of the reigning king and queen of the Khionian Realm before ascending to the throne herself.

As a child, Kaira was promised to Darem Reymi. The two were best friends growing up; they planned to wed after Reymi had spent a few years as a Starfleet officer. As a queen, Kaira intended to amend the Khionian Constitution and remove some traditions she considered outdated, including the Khionian marital abduction.

In 3196, Kaira's mother had a health scare, prompting her and her husband to abdicate immediately. Since the rulers of Khionia had always been a couple, Kaira was forced to move her sealing with Reymi forward. Reymi was brought to Sunset Moon via a marital abduction, pursued by Jay-Den Kraag who had mistaken the custom for a real kidnapping. Kaira met them there with her ko'zeine, Quill.

Although Reymi proceeded with the sealing, Kaira realized, during Kraag's ko'zeine toast about Reymi's deeds at Starfleet Academy, that he had suppressed his true self to comply with duty and tradition. Believing that they both deserved better, Kaira privately asked Reymi to abdicate, so that they could annul the marriage and allow him to return to Starfleet.
