The Khionians were a humanoid species native to the planet Khionia.

In 3195, Darem Reymi became the first Khionian in Starfleet. (SA: "Kids These Days")

Biology

Khionians were semi-aquatic and had gills with which to breathe underwater. They were capable of transforming between a form externally identical to Humans, and an alternate hairless form with gray scales and black eyes. While in this alternate form, they were capable of withstanding pressure differentials of up to seven thousand pounds and temperatures as low as −271 degrees Celsius. This allowed them to survive unprotected in the vacuum of space for up to eight minutes before they fatally froze. (SA: "Kids These Days", "Ko'Zeine")

Khionians could suffer from gland blockage, which made them malodorous. (SA: "Beta Test") Khionians had multiple appendices, which sometimes had to be removed. (SA: "Vitus Reflux")

Khionians did not produce enzymes that broke down alcohol, rendering them easily intoxicated. Conversely, they produced an excessive amount of polyphenol oxidase, which caused potassium-rich foods, such as bananas, to immediately decompose upon ingestion and cause vomiting. Their vomit resembled glitter. (SA: "Series Acclimation Mil", "300th Night")

Society and culture

Khionians were organized in an aristocratic society, with a hereditary royal family ruling over the Khionian Realm. Until 3195, with the abdication of Darem Reymi and the ascension of Queen Kaira as sole monarch, the Khionians were traditionally ruled by wed co-rulers assuming their duties together.

Royal matrimonial ceremonies were held on the arid Sunset Moon. These weddings, locally called sealings, consisted of a small private family ceremony before parades and fireworks were held the next day on Khionia.

Some Khionians were non-binary and perfectly integrated into their society, like Quill who was chosen by Kaira as her Ko'Zeine, her wedding witness. (SA: "Ko'Zeine")
