Captains Pike and Batel prepare for her next assignment as evil returns to threaten the Enterprise. (Season finale)
Summary
Captain Marie Batel materializes in the USS Enterprise transporter room, eager to spend some downtime with Captain Christopher Pike after endless meetings in preparation for her new assignment as the director of the Judge Advocate General's Office. But before she can rest, they spend some time relaxing with the crew at one of Pike's captain's table dinners.
On the planet Skygowan, Doctor Roger Korby has been making his way to Cali-Katchna – an ancient city, whose name was spoken by the Vezda. Working his way into the spiritual circles, Korby is escorted by Abna to a meeting with the high cleric Zeperez.
Aboard the Enterprise, diagnostics of the sickbay medical transporter reveal that residual pattern geometries had managed to reconstruct Nurse Dana Gamble, who had been killed to destroy the Vezda.
In the Cali-Katchna temple, Korby realizes the cleric is the Vezda that had possessed Gamble, taking hold on a planet where the Vezda are worshiped as gods.

Background information
Title
- This episode's title was revealed via press release on 5 June 2025. [1]
- It is one of several Star Trek productions to take its name from the text of the Captain's Oath, or a variation thereon, the others being Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, ENT: "Strange New World" and "These Are The Voyages...", SNW: "Strange New Worlds" (and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds itself), TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before", and TNG: "Where No One Has Gone Before".
Story and script
- According to Akiva Goldsman, Pike and Batel's illusory life together took inspiration from Jean-Luc Picard's experience as "Kamin" in TNG: "The Inner Light". [2]
- According to Henry Alonso Myers, the episode was written with the idea that it might have had to serve as a series finale. [3]

Costumes
- In Pike's vision, the illusory Elijah April wears an early 2260s version of the cadet dress uniform. In reality, by the time this part of the vision would have taken place, a different uniform style would be in use.

Continuity
- Pelia's deflected reference to having met a time traveler may refer to her encounter with La'an Noonien-Singh in "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow", making this the first time she has referenced those events. Pike was made aware of La'an having traveled in time in "Four-and-a-Half Vulcans" though there is no indication he makes the connection here, though he does give Pelia a warning glance, resulting in her modifying her sentence.
Miscellaneous
- Pelia comments "remind me to tell you about the time I spent with a time traveling doctor I once knew" in another reference to Doctor Who, following the appearance of the police box in "The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail".
