memory alpha

The independent Omega Sagitta system, also known as Madena, was an inhabited planetary system in the Alpha Quadrant.

Components

Stellar system

This was a single star system with a F-type primary.

Planetary system

In this system, there were the twin planets, Atlec and Straleb, that together formed the Coalition of Madena.

History

Atlec and Straleb were populated by a humanoid race which colonized the planets in the mid-2160s and now coexisted under a tenuous but successful treaty. By the mid-24th century, the governments of both worlds were cognizant of the Federation and their starships. The mineral tricellite was not available in this system.

In 2365, the USS Enterprise-D, on impulse power, traveled through the space between the twin planets. (TNG: "The Outrageous Okona")

In 2401, in the Starfleet Criminal Record of the Ferengi Sneed, this system was identified as the place of origin for Thadiun Okona. (PIC: "Disengage")

Stellar cartography

In 2259, the system's location was labeled in a stellar cartography chart seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. This system's symbol had a blue color, indicating that it was affiliated with the United Federation of Planets. (SNW: "Spock Amok", "A Quality of Mercy")

On stardate 1292.4, the location of the Madena system was labeled on a star chart used during a Section 31 Alpha Team briefing. (Star Trek: Section 31)

The system's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. Madena was in or near to Ferengi space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

In 3189, the location of Madena was denoted on a holographic star chart of the galaxy at Federation Headquarters. (DIS: "Die Trying")

In 3191, this system's location was labeled on a star chart. (DIS: "Red Directive")

In 3195, this system's position was labeled on a Federation star chart which was displayed in Starfleet Academy's Stellar Cartography laboratory. (SA: "Beta Test")

Later that year, this system's position was labeled on a Federation star chart which was displayed on the bridge of the USS Athena. Systems affiliated with the Ferengi Alliance, including this one, had red labels.(SA: "Come, Let's Away")

In 3196, during the Omega-47 crisis, the location of Omega Sagitta (Madena, Atlec, Straleb) was depicted on star charts and readouts used across several locations on the USS Athena to locate, monitor, and respond to the Omega-47 mines laid by the Venari Ral. This system was outside the barrier. (SA: "300th Night", "Rubincon")

Background information

The system was initially named the Omega Twelve system, and the planets were members of the Coalition of Madena VI. [1]

Although Sagitta ("The Arrow") was a real constellation visible from Earth, there was no star with the prefix "omega" since standard nomenclature in this constellation ended with Eta. Furthermore, a hypothetical "omega" star in this constellation should have the name "Omega Sagittae", as the genitive of Sagitta had to be applied.

In the Bayer designation, which was a system of stellar classification, the Greek letter indicated the brightness of a star in a constellation. In this case, Omega Sagitta would be the 24th brightest star in its constellation.

In the Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I") and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), the primary of the Omega Sagitta (Madena) system was classified as a F-type star.

At StarTrek.com, it was stated that Madena was a Trojan planet system in the Omega Sagitta system. [2](X)
