Starbase 4, abbreviated as SB4, was a Federation starbase that was administered by Starfleet. The planets Ariannus, Marcos XII, and Triacus, and the Epsilon Indi system were located near this starbase. This base was located in the Beta Quadrant.

History

The survivors of the Starnes Exploration Party on Triacus were transported to Starbase 4 by the USS Enterprise in 2268. (TOS: "And the Children Shall Lead")

Later in the same year, one of its shuttlecraft, da Vinci, was stolen from the starbase by Lokai, a fugitive from the planet Cheron, two weeks before it was found by the Enterprise. (TOS: "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield")

When the Venari Ral laid Omega-47 mines around the core of Federation space in 3196, this station was within the blast radius of one of the mines. (SA: "300th Night", "Rubincon")

Stellar cartography

In 2259, the location of this starbase was labeled on a stellar cartography chart seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. (SNW: "Spock Amok", "A Quality of Mercy")

In 2260, the location of this starbase was labeled on a star chart denoting the spread of a quantum uncertainty field across the region. It was outside of the area effect of the phenomena. (SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody")

On stardate 1292.4, the location of this station was labeled on a star chart used during a Section 31 Alpha Team briefing. It was depicted on the Federation side of the Federation-Romulan border. (Star Trek: Section 31)

The starbase's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. Starbase 4 was in or near to Federation space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

In 2401, this starbase's position was labeled on a star chart used by Captain William T. Riker during his attempt at finding the last known location of the SS Eleos XII. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

In 3196, during the Omega-47 crisis, the location of this starbase was depicted on star charts and readouts used across several locations on the USS Athena to locate, monitor, and respond to the Omega-47 mines laid by the Venari Ral. (SA: "300th Night", "Rubincon")

Background information

Starbase 4 was referred to in the final draft script of TOS: "Mudd's Women", at one point said to be ninety-six days, seven hours from the USS Enterprise at a velocity of point three seven of light speed.

The location of this starbase was labeled on a star chart that was seen on the Enterprise when a subspace fissure was discovered, but this is more than likely a production error due to its location on the map near Klingon space. (SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody")

The current location of Starbase 4 in the Beta Quadrant was based on the most recent star charts seen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Section 31.

Apocrypha

Starbase 4 appeared in the Pocket Books novel Memory Prime, written by Garfield Reeves-Stevens and Judith Reeves-Stevens. The base was under the command of Commodore Montana Wolfe, and had its insignia in the rough shape of the Orion constellation.
