memory alpha

Malcor, also known as Niburon or Mu Ceti or 87 Ceti, was an inhabited system in the Alpha Quadrant. This system was near the Garth system, the closest system to Malcor, and Tandaran territory. (ENT: "Detained"; TNG: "First Contact")

Components

Stellar system

This was a binary system. The primary Mu Ceti A was an A-type subgiant. Its companion Mu Ceti B was a K-type dwarf.

Planetary system

The Malcor system had six planets. In the system's habitable zone, there was Malcor III, home to the Malcorian civilization.

History

Sometime before 2152, the Niburon colonies were established in the Malcor system. These colonies were a place of safety for prisoners escaping from the Tandarans. (ENT: "Detained")

When the Venari Ral laid Omega-47 mines around the core of Federation space in 3196, this system was within the enclosed region. (SA: "Rubincon")

Stellar Cartography

Mu Ceti was visible from Earth as part of the constellation Cetus. It was approximately 87 light years from Sol.

In 3195, this system's position was labeled on a Federation star chart which was displayed in Starfleet Academy's Stellar Cartography laboratory. (SA: "Beta Test")

In 3196, during the Omega-47 crisis, the location of Malcor (Niburon, Mu Ceti) was depicted on star charts and readouts used across several locations on the USS Athena to locate, monitor, and respond to the Omega-47 mines laid by the Venari Ral. (SA: "Rubincon")

This star system was only mentioned in writing.
Associating Malcor with the real-world star Mu Ceti was a retcon. In the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "First Contact", the Malcor system was said to be 2,000 light years away from Earth. This change in the system's location brings it closer to Earth.
A system map of this system was seen in Mirasta Yale's science lab.
