Beta Zeta was an inhabited planetary system in the Kiley Local sector, Alpha Quadrant. This system was in Betazoid space.

Components

Stellar system

It was a single star system with a G-type primary.

Planetary system

In the system's habitable zone, there was the inhabited planet Betazed, which was the homeworld of the warp-capable Betazoids. In the late 2250s, this species had or was in the process of being inducted into the United Federation of Planets. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds")

History

In the Dominion War, from 2374 to 75, the Beta Zeta system was occupied by the Dominion. The occupation ended with the Dominion War Declaration of Peace. (DS9: "In the Pale Moonlight", "The Sound of Her Voice", "What You Leave Behind")

Subsequent to The Burn, with the Federation in shambles, the Venari Ral raided this system with devastating losses to the Betazoids. To protect themselves, they erected a psionic wall around their home system.

When the Venari Ral laid Omega-47 mines around the core of Federation space in 3196, this system was within the enclosed region. (SA: "300th Night", "Rubincon")

Later that year, upon the dedication of the new Federation capital city on Betazed, this system replaced the Sol system as the capital system of this interstellar alliance. (SA: "300th Night", "Rubincon")

Stellar cartography

In 2259, the location of Beta Zeta (Betazed) was labeled on a stellar cartography chart that was seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. This system's symbol had a blue color, indicating that it was affiliated with the United Federation of Planets. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "Children of the Comet", "Spock Amok")

On stardate 1292.4, the location of Beta Zeta (Betazed) was labeled in a chart used during a Section 31 Alpha Team briefing. (Star Trek: Section 31)

The system's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. The Beta Zeta system was in or near to Federation space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

In 2401, the location of Beta Zeta was labeled on a star chart that was on the bridge of the USS Titan. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

In 3196, during the Omega-47 crisis, the location of this system was depicted on star charts and readouts used across several locations on the USS Athena to locate, monitor, and respond to the Omega-47 mines laid by the Venari Ral. (SA: "Rubincon")

This star system was only mentioned in writing.
Information on the system's star came from the Star Trek: Star Charts (pp. 36 & 48) and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"; "Stellar Cartography" p. 41; "The Dominion War: Strategy and Battles, 2373-75"). The system got its name from the 21st century Human John Burke, chief astronomer of the Royal Academy. In October 2374 or September 2375, the Dominion won the Battle of Betazed and claimed the system.
In the Bayer designation, which was a system of stellar classification, the Greek letter indicated the brightness of a star in a constellation. In this case, Beta Zeta would be the 2nd brightest star in its constellation.
