memory alpha

61 Cygni, also known as the Tellar system, was an inhabited planetary system in the Tellarite sector, Alpha Quadrant. This system was affiliated with the United Federation of Planets.

Components

Stellar system

This was a binary star system. Both the primary 61 Cygni A and its companion 61 Cygni B were K-type dwarfs.

Planetary system

In the system's habitable zone, there was the planet Tellar Prime, which was the homeworld of the Tellarites. (ENT: "Cold Front", "Bounty"; PRO: "Starstruck")

History

When the Venari Ral laid Omega-47 mines around the core of Federation space in 3196, this system was within the enclosed region. (SA: "300th Night", "Rubincon")

Federation star chart, c. 2364

The 61 Cygni system was visible from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. This system was approximately 11 light years from Sol.

In the 2150s, this system's position was labeled on an United Earth star chart which was displayed in several crew and guest quarters aboard the Enterprise. (Star Trek: Enterprise, set decoration)

In 2364, the location of 61 Cygni was labeled on a star chart of the stellar neighborhood with Sol at the center. This chart was stored in the USS Enterprise-D library computer. Also that year, the chart was scanned by Outpost 63. (TNG: "The Naked Now", "The Last Outpost", "Conspiracy" production art; PIC: "Maps and Legends")

The system's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. 61 Cygni was in or near to Federation space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

In 2401, the location of 61 Cygni was labeled on a star chart that was seen on the USS Stargazer's bridge viewscreen. The chart was used to show the location of the combined Starfleet-Borg armada and where it needed to go to face a galactic-level threat. (PIC: "Farewell")

In 3195, the position of Tellar (61 Cygni) was labeled on a Federation star chart which was used in Starfleet Academy's Stellar Cartography laboratory. (SA: "Beta Test")

In 3196, during the Omega-47 crisis, the location of Tellar (61 Cygni) was depicted on star charts and readouts used across several locations on the USS Athena to locate, monitor, and respond to the Omega-47 mines laid by the Venari Ral. (SA: "300th Night", "Rubincon")

Appendices

Background information

This star system was only mentioned in writing.

Information on this system was derived from the episodes and films, the reference works Star Trek: Star Charts and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library, and real-world sources. The reference works were used extensively in the creation of star charts seen in Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The real-world information added to the article was current as of 2026.

The star chart naming stars within twenty light years of Sol was drawn by Rick Sternbach for the Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology (p. 77) in the late 1970s. This chart showed Earth commercial and exploration routes after the use of warp drive began. 61 Cygni was the destination on an exploration route.

The two stars of 61 Cygni were classified as K-class stars by the Star Trek: Star Charts (pp. 18, 19, 36, 44, 56; "United Federation of Planets I"), Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), and real-world astronomy. The system was located in Sector 007 (Tellar Sector).

The star chart seen in the series Star Trek: Enterprise made its first appearance in Crewman Daniels quarters in "Cold Front". It was also seen in several other episodes of the series, from 2151 to 2154. (For more information, see Federation star charts#United Earth Alpha/Beta star chart)

Apocrypha

In the Star Fleet Technical Manual (T0:00:01:19), the United Planets of 61 Cygni was one of the founding members of the Federation.

In The Worlds of the Federation (p. 20), the fifth planet in the system was the Tellarite homeworld.
