A preserved Talaxian Furfly
A Talaxian Furfly was a huge fly-like insect native to Talax that was covered in several spines and had a long tail.
According to Neelix, the Furfly was "An old spacefaring tradition among my people. If one of these creatures stowed away on your ship, it was a sign of good fortune."
A preserved Furfly had hung in the engine room of the Baxial since 2369. Neelix later gave the Furfly to B'Elanna Torres, who was clearly disgusted by it, as his contribution to the quantum slipstream drive constructed aboard USS Voyager in 2375. Upon seeing it, Torres simply described it as "cute", while Tuvok described Neelix as "an unending source of astonishment." (VOY: "Timeless")
In 2378, when Neelix met Brax and saw him with a model starship, he suggested The Fur Fly as a possible name for it. (VOY: "Homestead")
In 3195, the Digital Dean of Students at Starfleet Academy alerted Specialist Krebs that their Talaxian Furfly had emerged from hibernation. A short time later, the Dean asked Krebs to intervene as their Furfly was attempting to mate with a beaker. By midterms, the Furfly was eating its own fur. Before All-Worlds Day in 3196, the Furfly attacked a lab technician. At the end of the spring semester, the Furfly went missing, having last been seen entering a science lab replicator. When the USS Athena arrived at Betazed after defeating the Venari Ral, the Furfly emerged from the replicator and began mating with itself.
