Help Contents → Preferences

The Preferences special page allows you to personalize some aspects of MediaWiki. The preferences you set will only apply when you are logged in. Memory Alpha also has some recommended changes to your preferences.

To change your preferences, hover over the icon furthest to the bottom left (desktop) or upper right (mobile) corner of the screen and click on the "My Preferences" button in the drop-down menu; or, go directly to Special:Preferences.

User profile

Basic information

This section displays your username, a list of user groups to which you belong, your total number of edits on Memory Alpha, and your time of registration. None of these can be modified by the user. In addition, a link allowing you to access all of your account data on Memory Alpha is displayed, as well as a link to reset all preferences to their defaults, an option to change you Fandom password, a link allowing you to connect other accounts to your Fandom account, and an option to setup 2-factor authentication.

You are able to link your Fandom account with one account from each of the following services: Facebook, Google, Twitch, and Apple.

Internationalization

In this section, you can select your desired display language; note that this defaults to "en - English" on the English language version of Memory Alpha. You can also select your pronoun preference here (either he, she, or they), which are used in some scripts to refer to a user.

Signature

This section displays your existing signature as well as a box that allows you to create a custom signature. For more information on signatures, see Signature.

Email options

You may optionally register your email address (it will not be shown publicly on the site). This will enable you to reset your password by clicking the "Mail me a new password" box on the sign in screen, if you forget it. Your email address is also used to alert you of new messages or edits to pages you are following, if you select the appropriate settings (see below). You can also change an existing email address to a new one in this section.

If you do choose to register your email address, a validation email will be sent to the address provided. After your email address has been validated, you will see a message such as "Your email address was confirmed on 2011 October 11 at 10:18." under the "change email address" button.

Appearance

This section allows you to select whether you see all ads or a more limited number, where you land when you first enter Memory Alpha (Main Page, Recent Changes, or Community Feeds), and the category page layout format (dynamic or classic categories).

Notifications

Email notifications for all wikis

The options in this section cause an email to be generated whenever any of the selected events occur. In order to use this feature, you have to have previously registered and verified your email address (see above). Once the email address has been validated, you can choose to be emailed when:

Unsubscribe from all emails for all wikis

Enabling this option disables all emails from Fandom, overriding all other options.

Email notifications for this wiki only

Similar to the section above, the options in this section cause an email to be generated whenever any of the selected events occur on Memory Alpha. In order to use this feature, you must be an admin with a verified email address (see above). If you qualify, you can choose to be emailed when:

On Memory Alpha, the default editor should always be the source editor, and this should not be modified. For more information, see Editing. The other options in this section are:

Accessibility

Editing experience

If you have disabled the VisualEditor, this section allows you to hide the category module, which is the box in the category list at the bottom of pages that allows for the addition of new categories to a page without opening the editor. Memory Alpha strongly recommends that this option be checked, disabling the category module.
