Memory Alpha strives for accuracy and completion in all of its real-world articles. This includes making sure that the correct birth and death dates of production staff members are added to the relevant pages (where possible).

Recording of dates

When a production staff member's birth and/or death date is discovered, or a recent death is announced, it should be noted on the following pages:

Reporting death dates

Notable production staff deaths should be reported on Memory Alpha's news panel, provided the death or its announcement occurs after the date of the least recent death listed, which should be removed.

Verifying birth and death dates

In cases when two or more conflicting birth/death dates are reported for the same individual, precedence should be given to the date cited by (more) reliable sources.

Examples of usually reliable sources include:

Examples of usually unreliable sources include:

Be certain that you are identifying the individual correctly, and have not confused them with another individual of the same or similar name. Celebrities are also frequently the subject of Internet death hoaxes and scam accounts, so make sure you can verify that their deaths have in fact occurred before altering their MA pages.

Format

Births and deaths pages
* ..., (and) Bob O'Bob-bob (2000)
Date page
* 2000 – Bob O'Bob-bob dies.
Production year page
* 1 January – Bob O'Bob-bob dies.
Staff member article
*

Both dates should be mentioned in the sidebar and the body of the article, cited with an external link in the latter. Birth and death places, as well as the cause of death, should be noted as well; the first two in the sidebar and the article, and the last one only in the article.

Removing birth dates

Some individuals may request that Memory Alpha keep their birth date wholly or partially private. The bdayremoved template is used in these cases, assuring archivists and readers that the date's omission is intentional.

Please do not remove or re-add these dates unless you are the person in question, a third party acting on their behalf, (i.e. an agent or family member), or an archivist who has received a verified request for removal/re-addition from that person.

Requests can be made via the Memory Alpha email address.

Unknown dates

Sometimes the exact date of a staff member's birth or death may be unavailable to the general public, or unknown to the person(s) editing the page. In such cases, a question mark should be inserted in place of the unknown value(s).

Example:

Born 1 January, year unknown
1
Died January 2000, date unknown
?
