History

In the 24th century, this system was located near to the border between the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union.

El-Gatark was the site of a battle between the USS Valiant and a Cardassian battle cruiser in the early days of the Dominion War. (DS9: "Valiant")

Stellar cartography

In 3196, during the Omega-47 crisis, the location of El-Gatark was depicted on star charts and readouts used across several locations on the USS Athena to locate, monitor, and respond to the Omega-47 mines laid by the Venari Ral. This system was outside the affected region. These maps showed this system in or near the Venari Ral Zone. (SA: "300th Night", "Rubincon")

The Star Trek Encyclopedia, 4th ed., vol. 1, p. 230 placed El-Gatark in Federation territory. It might have been located in the Kepla sector, for the reason that acting captain Tim Watters never mentioned the Valiant leaving this sector just before the battle.
