Pickles were cucumbers that were generally stored in a jar filled with vinegar or brine. The condiment known as relish was made from pickles.
Jett Reno once used the example of "want(ing) their sandwiches cut diagonally with exactly two pickles on the side" as a personal quirk that two copies of an individual might share, yet still not be the same person you remember. (DIS: "Coming Home")
The term "pickle" could also metaphorically refer to a sticky problem.
The counselor of the USS Cerritos, Doctor Migleemo, was infamous for using such food metaphors. On one occasion, when Captain Carol Freeman was trying to get information about her daughter Beckett Mariner, he told her "Captain, you know I can't share what your crew tells me. At Sprocket's birthday party, he made a wish that he would have pickles. Not long later, as if conjured by his wish, a piñata asteroid full of pickles nearly collided with their planet, and the scouts used an asteroid deflector to beam a baseball bat at it, smashing it like a piñata, but instead of being filled with candy, it was filled with pickles, which rained down on Sprocket and his friends, some of whom began eating them.
