Merak II was the inhabited second planet of the Merak system, This Class M planet was the home of a warp-capable civilization. Plant life on this planet was the source of the oxygen in the atmosphere.

History

Prior to stardate 5818, Merak II was admitted as a member of the Federation.

In that year, the planet experienced a bacterial botanical plague. The plague was treated with a toxic ore, known as zenite, which was acquired by the USS Enterprise. (TOS: "The Cloud Minders")

In 2370, Quark falsely claimed that Elim Garak had ordered a sizing scanner from Merak II from the Ferengi. (DS9: "The Wire")

In the 32nd century, Merak II was a Federation member planet. It was listed with other members on a video wall in the USS Athena. (SA: "The Life of the Stars")

When the Venari Ral laid Omega-47 mines around the core of Federation space in 3196, this planet was within the enclosed region. (SA: "300th Night")

Stellar cartography

Merak II was located in a minor quadrant of the Alpha Quadrant and was approximately 80 light years from Sol. It was located less than three hours travel, at top warp speed, from Ardana.

This planet was only mentioned in dialogue.

This planet's quadrant of origin was inferred based on the position of its star system as seen in the star chart appearing in the Star Trek: Picard episode "Maps and Legends".

In the script for "The Wire", Merak was listed in the pronunciation guide, where the term was pronounced as "MARE-ak". However, at StarTrek.com, Merak was pronounced as "MARE-ack". [1](X)

In the Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I"), Merak II was listed as a Federation member in 2378.
