Featured articles are considered to be examples of Memory Alpha's best work and are showcased on the main page and in the portals. They are especially well-written, informative, and comprehensive articles that cover all available information on a subject. The following policies and guidelines are intended to maintain adequate standards of quality for featured articles.
Nominations
If you know of an article you think meets the featured article criteria, you can nominate it on the featured article nominations page.
Discussing nominations
- Any autoconfirmed user may participate in nominations.
- Starting a nomination is considered a vote in support of the article.
- Be sure that you are familiar with the entire article before you form an opinion and vote.
- If you approve of an article, write
'''Support'''followed by your reasons. - If you have any objections, write
'''Oppose'''followed by your reasons. - If you want to comment without supporting or opposing, you may do so.
- To withdraw a vote, strike it out (with
<s>...</s>) rather than removing it. - As always, sign your comments (
~~~~) and follow Memory Alpha's indentation practices.
Nominations and votes that do not meet or directly address the featured article criteria may be struck or removed by administrators without prior notice. In such an event, the archivist in question will then be contacted with a reason why their post was removed.
Resolving nominations
If, when a nomination is closed, there are at least two support votes and there are no oppose votes (or all objections to the article have been resolved), the nomination is successful. Otherwise, the nomination is unsuccessful. (Objections to the article's blurb are not objections to the article itself.)
A nomination can be closed once it has been open for fourteen days. Nominations with unanimous support or oppose votes and more than five votes total can be closed after remaining open for only seven days.
When a nomination is closed, the discussion should be moved to the bottom of that article's talk page and a link to the discussion should be added to the nomination archive. If the nomination was successful, the current revision of the article becomes the featured one and the {{featured}} template should be added to the bottom of the article.
Renominating an article
If a nomination was unsuccessful, the article may be nominated again if at least four weeks have past since the unsuccessful nomination was closed. This time should be used to address any unresolved objections that were made during the previous nomination discussion.
Reviews
Featured articles must be brought up for review from time to time to ensure that they still comply with the featured article criteria. It is expected that these articles will have undergone revisions over time to keep them up to date, and it's important to make sure that these revisions have maintained the quality expected of a featured article.
Any featured article more than six months old can be listed on the featured article reviews page. State whether you think the article's status should be upheld, revoked, or if you are undecided, and make sure to give your reasoning; then add the {{far}} template to the top of the article in question while leaving an edit summary informing other members that it was listed for review.
Review discussions
- Any autoconfirmed user may participate in reviews.
- Starting a review is considered a vote for the suggested course of action, if one is stated.
- Be sure that you are familiar with the entire article before you form an opinion and vote.
- If you think the article should still be featured, write
'''Uphold''' featured statusfollowed by your reasons. - If you think the article should no longer be featured, write
'''Remove''' featured statusfollowed by your reasons. - If you wish to request more time to make minor changes or read the article, write
'''Hold'''followed by your reasons and how long you think you would need. Generally, holds should only be for a few days at most. - If you want to comment without supporting or opposing, you may do so.
- To withdraw a vote, strike it out (with
<s>...</s>) rather than removing it. - As always, sign your comments (
~~~~) and follow Memory Alpha's indentation practices.
Votes that do not meet or directly address the featured article criteria may be struck or removed by administrators without prior notice. In such an event, the archivist in question will then be contacted with a reason why their post was removed.
Resolving reviews
If, when a review is closed, there are at least two remove votes and the majority of votes are remove votes, the article's featured status is removed. If there are at least two uphold votes and there are no remove votes (or all objections to the article have been resolved), the article's featured status is upheld. In all other cases, the review is deadlocked and the article remains featured. (Objections to the article's blurb are not objections to the article itself.)
A review can be closed once it has been open for fourteen days. Reviews with unanimous uphold or remove votes and more than five votes total can be closed after remaining open for only seven days.
When a review is closed, the discussion should be moved to the bottom of that article's talk page and a link to the discussion should be added to the review archive. It the article was upheld, the current revision of the article becomes the featured one; the {{featured}} template at the bottom of the article and the blurb should then be updated.
