The goal of this project is to find out which Star Trek episodes and films really contain specific dates (of the Gregorian calendar variety) or can otherwise be tied to a specific date without resorting to any speculation, like the assumed correspondence of one thousand stardate units to one Earth year, or the unconfirmed idea that stardate XX000.0 corresponds to 1 January.

Fact list

Title Stardate Date Reasoning Notes
TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever" 1930
  • There are various lines of dialogue throughout this episode indicating that the past scenes are set in 1930. One example is when Leonard McCoy says, "This looks like old Earth around 1920 or 25," and Edith Keeler responds, "Would you care to try for 30?"
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 1986
TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before" 1312.4–1313.8 2265
  • In this episode, James T. Kirk said that, "From directly ahead, we're picking up a recorded distress signal, the call letters of a vessel which has been missing for over two centuries [the SS Valiant]."
  • An okudagram from ENT: "In A Mirror, Darkly" provides the launch date of the Valiant as 2065, which is therefore the earliest the Valiant could have gone missing. Given that Kirk says the Valiant has been missing for over two hundred years, this episode must take place no earlier than 2265.
  • Furthermore, in TOS: "The Deadly Years" (2267), Spock asked Hikaru Sulu, "How long have you served with Captain Kirk?" Sulu responded, "Two years, sir." Therefore, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" must be set in 2265.
  • The stardates are from Kirk's log entries.
TOS: "Balance of Terror" 1709.2–1709.6 2266
  • SNW: "A Quality of Mercy" depicts events from this episode in an alternate timeline, in which we learn (through Christopher Pike) that said events occur in "2266." Therefore, this episode must be set in that year.
  • The stardates are from Kirk's log entries.
TOS: "A Taste of Armageddon" 3192.1–3193.0 2267
  • In this episode, Spock said that, "When first contacted more than fifty years ago, Eminiar VII was at war with its nearest neighbor."
  • An okudagram from ENT: "In A Mirror, Darkly" provides the contact date as 2217. Therefore, this episode must take place no earlier than 2267. Because its stardate places it before TOS: "The Deadly Years" (2267), this episode must also be set no later than 2267. Therefore, it must be set in 2267.
  • The first stardate is from Captain Kirk's log entry, while the second is from Lieutenant Commander Scott's.
TOS: "The Devil in the Dark" 3196.1 2267
TOS: "Errand of Mercy" 3198.4–3201.7 2267
TOS: "The Gamesters of Triskelion" 3211.7–3259.2 2267
TOS: "Metamorphosis" 3219.8–3220.3 2267 According to McCoy, "Zefram Cochrane died a hundred and fifty years ago." (An additional four references to a 150-year period were made.) According to Cochrane, "I was eighty-seven years old when I came here." An okudagram from ENT: "In A Mirror, Darkly" established both that Cochrane was born in 2030 and was eighty-seven in 2117. This further supports a date of 2267 for this episode.
TOS: "Operation -- Annihilate!" 3287.2–3289.8 2267
TOS: "Amok Time" 3372.7 2267
TOS: "This Side of Paradise" 3417.3–3417.7 2267
TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?" 3468.1 2267
TOS: "The Deadly Years" 3478.2–3579.4 2267
  • This episode's year comes from an okudagram seen in VOY: "Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy".
  • The stardates are from Kirk's log entries.
  • In this episode, Kirk states, "I'm thirty four years old." An okudagram from ENT: "In A Mirror, Darkly" provides Kirk's birthdate as 22 March 2233.
  • Therefore, this episode must take place between 22 March and 31 December 2267.
TOS: "Friday's Child" 3497.2–3499.1 2267
  • Since "The Deadly Years" is set between 22 March and 31 December 2267 and "The Doomsday Machine" is set after "The Deadly Years" but still in 2267, all episodes with stardates between them must be set between 22 March and 31 December 2267 as well.
TOS: "The Changeling" 3541.9 2267
TOS: "Wolf in the Fold" 3614.9–3615.4 2267
TOS: "Obsession" 3619.2–3620.7 2267
TOS: "The Apple" 3715.0–3715.6 2267
TOS: "Journey to Babel" 3842.3–3843.4 2267
TOS: "Bread and Circuses" 4040.7–4041.7 2267
TAS: "The Slaver Weapon" 4187.3 2267
TOS: "The Doomsday Machine" 4202.1 2267
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan 8130.3–8141.6 2283-03-22
  • This film must be set on the 22 March as it is set on Kirk's birthday.
  • At two points in the film, it is implied that we are fifteen years after TOS: "Space Seed":
    1. Khan: "...marooned here fifteen years ago by Captain James T. Kirk."
    2. Kirk: "There's a man out there I haven't seen in fifteen years who's trying to kill me."
  • "Space Seed" is set in 2266 or 2267. Therefore, this film would seem to be set in 2281, 2282, or 2283.
  • The label on the bottle of Romulan ale that McCoy gives to Kirk as a birthday gift reads 2283. When Kirk reads the year on the label, McCoy responds, "Yeah, well, it takes this stuff a while to ferment." If we allow that the ale may not have fermented yet, this establishes the earliest possible date for the film as 2283, which, when combined with the previous point, sets this film in 2283.
  • In Star Trek Generations, in the Nexus, Kirk at one point imagines himself nine years into the past to the day he told Antonia he was returning to Starfleet. This must have occurred before this film, as he is supervising command-track cadets at Starfleet Academy as an active Starfleet admiral at this film's start. Furthermore, Kirk entered the Nexus in either 2292 or 2293. This means that he returned to Starfleet in 2282, 2283, or 2284, which aligns with our date of 2283.
  • According to a commemorative plaque(X) for the Reliant which appeared in PIC: "The Star Gazer", The Wrath of Khan was set in 2285.
  • Based on the above, this film is set on 22 March 2283 or 2285.
  • Per MA:RESOURCE#In-universe resources, spoken dialogue takes precendence over visual material. The 2285 date is supported by one piece of visual material, while the 2283 date is supported by multiple pieces of spoken and visual material. Therefore, The Wrath of Khan is set on 22 March 2283.
