Holloway was a Human enlisted as a sciences division cadet in Starfleet Academy during the late 32nd century.

Part of the inaugural 3195 class at the San Francisco Academy campus, Holloway was overtly enthusiastic about the prospect of studying Ferengal horned tapeworms for Xenobiology the following semester, which made his fellow cadet Caleb Mir uncomfortable. (SA: "Beta Test")

While preparing for the Aaron Satie Debate Competition, Holloway questioned whether The Doctor was allowed to use the word "chickenshit" around them. The Doctor retorted that he had existed for longer than Holloway's entire lineage, and had earned the right to speak as he saw fit. (SA: "Vox In Excelso")
