Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (27 September 1950–4 December 2025; age 75) was a Japanese actor who played the Mandarin bailiff in the Star Trek: The Next Generation first season episode "Encounter at Farpoint". For his appearance, he was credited as Cary-Hiroyuki.
Tagawa made nearly eighty film and television appearances. His most notable motion pictures include The Last Emperor (1987), Twins (1988, with Tony Jay, Nehemiah Persoff, Robert Harper, Tom McCleister, and Wayne Grace), Licence to Kill (1989, with Anthony Zerbe), The Last Warrior (1989, with Gary Graham), Nemesis (1993, with Marjorie Monaghan, Nicholas Guest, Marjean Holden, Thomas Jane, Jennifer Gatti, and Branscombe Richmond), Rising Sun (1993, with Ray Wise and Max Grodénchik), Space Rangers (1993, with Clint Howard), Mortal Kombat (1995), The Phantom (1996, with Bill Smitrovich and Leon Russom), Vampires (1998), NetForce (1999, starring Scott Bakula, with Sterling Macer, Jr.), Snow Falling on Cedars (1999, with James Cromwell), Pearl Harbor (2001, with Randy Oglesby, Raphael Sbarge, Glenn Morshower, Leland Orser, Pat Healy, and Manu Intiraymi), Planet of the Apes (2001, with Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti, Evan Parke, Erick Avari, David Warner, Anne Elizabeth Ramsay, Freda Foh Shen, Deep Roy, Michael Jace, Michael Wiseman, Eileen Weisinger, Kevin Grevioux, Jay Caputo, Joshua Croughwell, Todd Babcock, Craig Appel, and Dragon Dronet), and the first two seasons of Nash Bridges with Daniel Roebuck and Mary Mara.
In later years, he appeared in Tekken (2009) as Heihachi Mishima, and in the series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, reprising his role as Shang Tsung. He also guest starred in two episodes of NBC's Heroes, featuring Zachary Quinto, two episodes in Hawaii Five-0 and had a recurring role in Revenge. He also co-starred in 47 Ronins (2013).
