"How many secret passages does this place have?"
"It's a trans-dimensional time ziggurat, so there's a lot, okay?"
Dal R'El and Wesley Crusher, 2384 ("The Devourer of All Things, Part II")

The time ziggurat was a massive structure created by the Travelers. It was a temple designed to resist the Loom, cosmic scavengers who fed on dying timelines by freezing time. It also served as a training facility for the Supervisors.

History

In 2384, Wesley Crusher led the crew of the USS Protostar to the temple, planning to send them to a different location within the galaxy to recover the Protostar, a necessary step in fixing a temporal paradox that threatened the existence of the prime timeline. He had hoped that if they all met at the temple it would hide them from the Loom long enough while he located the place the crew needed to be sent. Unfortunately, the Loom showed up earlier than Crusher had expected and they were forced to improvise. Crusher made use of secret wall panels, hidden stashes of gadgets, and reality-warping gates in order to bring them to a hidden saferoom where he was certain the Loom would not be able to find them. However, against Crusher's wishes, the Protostar crew took action to save Maj'el from the Loom after she beamed down from the USS Voyager-A, thus compromising their location. They fled to a vault where Crusher was able to finish his calculations to discover where the crew needed to be sent, and ultimately he sent them through a gate to a completely different location in the galaxy. Crusher then caused the temple, planet and the Loom to vanish completely. (PRO: "The Devourer of All Things, Part I", "The Devourer of All Things, Part II")

Location

The time ziggurat was located on a planet that existed out of phase with the surrounding quantum reality, though its gravity still affected the asteroids in close proximity.

On the Infinity, Rok-Tahk, Zero, and Jankom Pog used a combination of both transporter and shield subsystems to pull the planet back into phase with the ship's current quantum reality.

When Voyager-A approached, the crew remodulated the long-range scanners to discover the planet, observing that it had been hidden in a pocket of subspace.

Traveler Wesley Crusher used the power of space, time, and thought to hide the entire planet such that Voyager was unable to locate it again.

Architecture

The time ziggurat was constructed from a variety of materials, ranging from large blocks of stone to metallic doors and equipment. It contained many large open spaces and high-ceilinged passageways. In many places, sand poured down from the desert planet outside. There were tall stone statues of Travelers in a large central room. All this evoked a feeling that there was a deep history to the place. Crusher commented that the temple could get drafty, but he had plenty of sweaters to share.

Crusher's vault was protected with a thick metal door, seemingly from from mid-20th century Earth. His vault contained temporal equipment that could be used for a variety of purposes, such as:

Equipment

Like the architecture, Crusher's equipment also combined elements from both the past and the future, featuring large pieces of stone as well as computer displays and input panels.

Crusher revealed that his equipment functioned using a few important temporal items:

Secret passages

Wesley made use of several hidden doors within the temple. Some could be activated by pushing on what looked like a wall or a door. One hidden cubby required Crusher to know the right location and then somehow open up a door seemingly in the middle of open space. Crusher also used the power of space, time, and thought to drop a large section of stone down from the ceiling to block a Loom's passage.
