The Many and the One was a memoir written by Spock regarding the challenges he faced as one of the first Vulcan cadets in Starfleet.

Jean-Luc Picard owned a first edition paper book of this title, which he kept in his personal library at Château Picard. In 2401, he gifted it to Elnor upon the latter's assignment to the USS Excelsior. In response to Elnor's concern that his excitement may distract him from his studies, Picard quoted from the book: "Exhilaration enhances the absorption of knowledge.", which he explained meant "In other words, live a little." The prop book used in "The Star Gazer" was fully printed. The prop had a printed copyright date of 2320, and its dedication page read "For Jim". The text of its first page was adapted from Memory Alpha's article on Spock. [1]
