This template can be used on file description pages to provide information about the license used in publishing a specific file.

Variables
- type: the type of file; this can be set to:
- image;
- audio file;
- video; or
- license: the license or copyright status of the file. If you own the file you are uploading, you can choose which license to publish it under. Otherwise, you must indicate the license the file was released under by its owner. The license can be set to:
- cc-by: the Creative Commons Attribution license.
- cc-by-sa: the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license.
- cc-by-nc: the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial license.
- cc-by-nc-sa: the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license.
- cc-by-nd: the Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives license.
- cc-by-nc-nd: the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives license.
- cc-0: the CC0 license. This license releases the file into the public domain.
- pd: the file is in the public domain.
- fairuse: the file is copyrighted, but the uploader as well as contributors subsequently using the file claim that they use the file in a way that constitutes fair use according to United States copyright law.
- copyright: the file is copyrighted, and uploaded here by the copyright owner, or the copyright owner has given explicit permission for the file to be used on Memory Alpha.
- other: this is only to be used in the rare case where none of the "standard" licenses apply. In this case, add complete and proper licensing information to the variable "other-license".
- nonegiven: this is not a license itself, but a lack of one. Files that are uploaded without adding a proper license will be checked by other contributors. If none of the other licenses clearly apply, the file may be tagged using this "license". Unless it can reasonably assumed that the original uploader is the copyright owner, in which case the upload might be construed as licensing the file under the CC BY-NC license, the file is likely a candidate for deletion.
- proof: This optional parameter takes a URL confirming the file's license, if it is not shown by the file's source (see below); can be enhanced by the "archivedate" parameter if the URL's target no longer exists.
- owner: This is a free text variable. Use it to identify the copyright owner or, in the case of public-domain files, the creator.
- source: Another free text variable; should be used to identify the source where this file was taken from. This is especially important where "ccl" or "fair use" licensing is used.
- rationale: This variable can be used to provide further information about the file and its copyright status, especially rationale for why fair use can be argued.
Example
For an image, created by User:Example and released under the CC BY-NC license, a proper template call might look like this:

|proof=example.com
|archivedate=20231231235809
|owner=[[User:Example]]
|source=Direct upload, no other source.
|rationale=Created by me, not using any copyrighted material.
}}
