Roger Searle Payne (29 January 1935–10 June 2023; age 88) was a biologist and environmentalist who supplied recordings of humpback whales' whale song for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Payne, and the New York Zoological Society for which he was a research zoologist, received special thanks in the film’s credits.
