The first season of Star Trek: Prodigy debuted on 28 October 2021 on streaming service Paramount+ in weekly installments, with two multi-month hiatuses. The series premiere was first broadcast by Nickelodeon (for whom the show had been commissioned) on 17 December 2021.

On 8 July 2022, the series as a whole started its broadcast run on Nickelodeon in its home market. The series had debuted earlier in several overseas markets on local subsidiaries, particularly in those markets which were at the time not yet being served by Paramount+ or one of its derivatives. Summary

In 2383, on the Tars Lamora prison colony located in the Delta Quadrant, The Unwanted mine for chimerium. One young prisoner named Dal R'El seeks a means to escape, and in the process discovers an abandoned Federation starship, the USS Protostar, along with Brikar prisoner Rok-Tahk. Together with the Medusan Zero, the Tellarite Jankom Pog, the Mellanoid slime worm Murf, and Gwyndala, daughter of Tars Lamora's overseer The Diviner, the six young outcasts commandeer the ship and use it to escape. Now having to figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future, they are helped by Hologram Janeway, a holographic training advisor modeled after Starfleet Captain Kathryn Janeway. Over the course of their adventures together, the crew are each introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents as they encounter strange new life and civilizations.

On 1 November 2022, Prodigy's first season was nominated by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in the first annual Children's and Family Emmy Awards (a Daytime Emmy Awards spin-off) for an Emmy Award in two categories, including one of its most coveted categories: "Outstanding Animated Series". [5] [6] An additional sound category nomination followed on 2 November 2023. [7] Coincidentally, Star Trek: The Animated Series was also nominated in the inaugural nominee lineup in corresponding categories of the then-new Daytime Emmy Awards in 1974, winning the latter one on 11 December 2022. [8]

The first season of Star Trek: Prodigy also won in a three-way-tie at the 2024 inaugural Gold Collision Award. [9] [10]
