Optimism was a feeling of hope, either for a desired outcome or overall, as opposed to pessimism.

In 2375, The Doctor suggested optimism to Seven of Nine regarding a diplomatic approach to dealing with Species 8472, despite the past conflict between them and the crew of the USS Voyager. Seven stated that it was difficult to be optimistic when preparing for battle, but The Doctor pointed out that Human history had many examples of weapons of mass destruction being made in the hope that they would never be used.
