Summary

From the book jacket
This all-new Star Trek novel celebrates the 60th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series – continuing the legacy of Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise.
2269: The prospect of peace had seemed unattainable until the assistance of the Federation. Finally, countless ancient enemies have stopped their conflicts simply by listening to one another. On the planet Voyzr, Captain James T. Kirk and his crew aided the planet to realize peace.
2289: Invited to celebrate twenty years of peace, the crew of the USS Enterprise-A is returning to Voyzr as honored guests. Security Chief Pavel Chekov remembers his visit to the planet as a green ensign. He has always believed the negotiations were too easy, and he wondered if there are people on the planet who still long for war – and have been waiting for just the right moment to upend the peace. Unfortunately, Chekov discovers he is right when he finds himself in the middle of a dangerous ploy.

Memorable quotes

"With apologies to Doctor McCoy, it’s dead, sir."

- Pavel Chekov, to James T. Kirk

"When war is all you’ve ever known, peace can be an alarming prospect, I suppose."
"Illogical, but true nonetheless."

- James T. Kirk and Spock, regarding the end of the Voyzr civil war

"I must say, though, you have quite the ‘colorful’ medical history. Just in the last decade–plus alone, you’ve been zapped by an alien probe, mind-controlled by a parasitic eel, and required emergency brain surgery… in the twentieth century no less!"
"All in the line of duty."

- Simone Tovar and Pavel Chekov

"Frankly, I’m impressed that you’re as fit as you are, considering your exploits."
"I owe it all to clean living, and the medicinal benefits of fine Russian vodka, of course."

- Simone Tovar and Pavel Chekov

"Just think about what I'm saying, okay?"
"When have I not?"
"You want a list?"
"I'll take your word for it."

- Hikaru Sulu and Ryjo regarding Sulu's relationship advice

"This is ridiculous. I've taken on Klingons, Romulans, the Gorn, even 'God' not so long ago, and I trash my ankle playing racquetball?"
"Serves you right for playing cutthroat against two much younger crew members."

- James T. Kirk and Leonard McCoy

"I can still climb El Capitan for Pete's sake."
"As I recall, you fell from El Capitan."
"Only because Spock distracted me."

- James T. Kirk and Leonard McCoy

"Ryjo hoped McCoy’s bedside manner was more reassuring than his unwelcome contributions as a passenger."

"I'll be damned!"
"Hopefully not."

- Leonard McCoy and Ryjo

"Once again, Captain, we're very grateful for that and deeply regret the loss of your shuttlecraft. Er, we're not going to be billed for that, are we?"
"Not to worry, we don’t charge for saving lives."

- Fressa and James T. Kirk

"As I understand it, Finagle was actually born in a Russian colony on Grushenka V…"
"Is that so? Next you’ll be insisting that Finagle is actually short for Fingalski."
"Da. That goes without saying."

- Ryjo and Hikaru Sulu

"I like to think I’m still quite the spring chicken, as they say in Vladivostok."
"Nothing chicken about you, Chekov, young or old."

- Ryjo, Hikaru Sulu, and James T. Kirk regarding if Ryjo is fit to sit through the ceremony so soon after the shuttlecraft accident

"Besides, from what Sulu tells me, it sounds as though you liked my doppelgänger best when he was acting the most like me."
"That’s one way to look at it, Commander."

- Pavel Chekov and Simone Tovar regarding her relationship with Ryjo
