Many of the episode reference sections are quite large. How about doing what they do at Memory Beta - sorting references by category (e.g. People, Locations, Starships, etc) See Conspiracy (episode) for example. -LauraCC (talk) 21:00, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

The reference sections have grown larger over the years from how they started out. Having said that, I'm not opposed to splitting them up, like MB does, but I don't feel an overwhelming need to do so, either. It would be a *huge* undertaking to complete the work, and we have lots of other projects in various stages of completion without starting another. What does everyone else think? -- Renegade54 (talk) 22:14, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
This seems like a decent idea. It would be quite a lot of work to complete, but I think it would be fine to start, even if it takes ages to finish – the inconsistency in the meantime shouldn't really be a problem.
If we decide to move forward with this, I'd like to know what people think of formatting the references sections as collapsible lists like those in appearances sections, à la
  • People
    • ...
    • ...
    • ...
  • Locations
    • ...
    • ...
    • ...
  • Starships

What do people think of this idea? 🖖 Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontribs) 01:04, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Or collapsible nav boxes? -LauraCC (talk) 01:06, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Like this?

That's nice. I like that it keeps the horizontal orientation; I don't have a problem with that, as long as it's not overly long. What does everyone else prefer? -LauraCC (talk) 02:01, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

My preference would be to keep the yellow section headings in some form of collapsible list. That way the look and feel is consistent with the rest of the page, and the TOC would still show the sections. Id rather not use the nav boxes; those should remain for navigation, not section demarcation. -- Renegade54 (talk) 21:48, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Okay, can it still be horizontally formatted? -LauraCC (talk) 21:52, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

OK, how about we use hlist? So like this:

Which would produce
That looks about like what we're doing now, but is a proper semantic list in the output HTML. If desired, I could instead make a new template that works the same but uses semicolons like we do now, so there would be no visual change. Whichever people prefer. 🖖 Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontribs) 21:59, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Okay. Horizontal by section (people, starships, locations, etc.). -LauraCC (talk) 17:04, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

I agree with Renegade's "not [necessarily] opposed, but don't feel an overwhelming need to"-sentiment (while I also believe: simplest is best, we should approach this based on how users are actually using the references section - not arbitrary reorganization for reorganization's sake.) I perceive a lot of ideas are rolling out live lately before the logistics have been thoroughly thought out -- I encourage this be worked out thoroughly here before deciding to implement it on pages or not, and allow a more time for community feedback. - AJHalliwell (talk) 17:23, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

Seems fair enough. -LauraCC (talk) 17:24, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

Some episodes just have this really daunting brick wall of references. -LauraCC (talk) 17:31, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

Does anyone know why MB sorted theirs, and if they used to do what we do now? -LauraCC (talk) 22:35, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
