Barnhart was a male Human Starfleet lieutenant who lived during the mid-23rd century. He served aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk in 2266 as a navigator.

In 2266, Barnhart was at the navigation console during the Enterprise's mission to planet M-113.
Later, Barnhart was performing maintenance on the ship's atmospheric system when he became one of a number of Enterprise crewmembers killed by a creature which had infiltrated the ship and was extracting all of the sodium chloride from its victims. Barnhart's body was discovered by Janice Rand and Hikaru Sulu on deck nine, section two. Upon discovering his body, Rand noted the skin mottling on his face, while Sulu called a medical team. Sulu later reported the casualty to Kirk, noting the cause to be the same symptoms that had killed Sturgeon and Darnell, as well as confirming the presence to the M-113 creature aboard the Enterprise.
