The flag of the United States of America, also known as the American flag and US flag, was a patriotic banner that symbolized that region of Earth from the 18th to the 21st centuries.

The design of the United States flag remained mostly unchanged over the nation's four hundred years, with the exception of the number of stars which appeared on it. Each star represented the number of states that were united under the flag. (TNG: "The Royale")

History

The first American flag was sewn by Betsy Ross in the 18th century. Its design had 13 stars arranged in a circle. This first version of the flag continued to see unofficial use into the 21st century in the build-up to the Second Civil War. (ENT: "Storm Front, Part II"; SNW: "Strange New Worlds")

In 2024, a United States flag was part of a Lunar surface photo backdrop at the Europa Gala. (PIC: "Two of One")

Flag designs with 52 stars were used between AD 2033 and 2079. (TNG: "The Royale")

Flags with only 50 stars were still sometimes used into the mid 21st century, applied to the hulls of ships such as the XCV-100. (SNW: "The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail")

The Yangs of Omega IV had, in quite an astonishing example of Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planetary Development, developed a parallel society to the United States of America, including its flag. Centuries after a devastating war destroyed their society, the Yangs worshiped a 50-star American flag as a holy symbol. (TOS: "The Omega Glory")

Alternate timeline

In an alternate timeline created as part of the Temporal Cold War by the assassination of Vladimir Lenin in 1916, the American flag was still used concurrently with the Nazi flag during Nazi Germany's occupation of America. By the alternate 1944 it had a design with 56 stars. (ENT: "Storm Front", "Storm Front, Part II")
